ACR1 Efforts to Combat the Materials Shortage
Due to COVID-19 shutdowns, there are many industries experiencing shortages, including the roofing industry. Everyone in the construction industry has been taxed with the serious material shortages that are affecting many around the country. Most of it stems from the lack of labor in manufacturing, logistics, construction, etc.
What is Causing the Material Shortages?
With lockdowns stopping buying and manufacturing processes, there was a domino effect on the industry that is continuing to be an issue. In addition to the lack of raw materials in the manufacturing chain, transportation issues, like trucking, are impacting roofing contractors’ schedules.
ACR1 has been very proactive in acquiring new sources of vendors to maintain busy production schedules. We receive materials from around the world and have been very creative in acquiring new sources in many ways.
What Shortages are Affecting the Roofing Industry?
Isolation board was the first serious shortage. Our existing vendor told us in March that they would not be able to supply us until November of this year. This would affect about 30% of our business that we would be able to serve. Walking away from 30% of our customers was unacceptable, so we scoured the country looking for this product to maintain our production flow. We found a large project canceled in Texas with eight semi-loads of isolation board, but we had to take it all. We acquired this material and purchased a warehouse to store it as needed.
As many other products have become hard to acquire sporadically, we have had to adjust schedules and juggle deliveries to keep working. This has slowed production some, but overall, we are only off 10-15% from record years.
We have been very blessed to be able to meet our customers’ needs. We know many of our customers’ businesses have been severely impacted by these shortages. Still, many have not, so we have been very fortunate to find new business in a very challenging environment.
